The Good, the bad, and the smoking ?

Ok, politics and propaganda aside, have there been cases of smokers living far past the average life expectancy? Have there been cases of long time smokers not developing cancer or other diseases ociated with the drug? Blackened lungs and tartar isn't good. I know that. But I've grown up hearing only one side of the issue, I'd like to know what lies on the other side of the coin. I promise I won't start smoking, either :D
