Dont the religous pick and choose their facts with the flood myth?
In order for something to be true--all the data points invovled must be true--not just selected points. In the sciences--if just one fact in a theory is not true--that theory must be modified or discarded. Oil well drilling is in the news--drilling in the ocean deeps that is. Floods, rapidly moving water covering previously dry areas leave a very legible signature in the land. When water moves rapidly etc one has a layer of gravel, organic detrirtus (tree limbs, bodies etc), boulders if the water is moving very fast--all filled in with sand and silts. The signature is unmistakable. Core samples in the mississipi river valley give clear evidences of flooding 37 times in the last 10,000 years. Core samples in the undisturbed ocean deeps are without this feature--we find in the ocean deeps unmistakable evidences of great volcanic eruptions (ash) but no layer of detritus all layed down at the same date. This information to the unbiased would tell us that the misssissipi flood was localized in the mississipi river valley but no evidence whatsoever of a world wide flood. If we were to merely look at the Noah and the ark story with scientific eyes--the story would be considered falsified. There are those that wish with all their hearts that it was a true story--problem is wishing doesn't make it true. Picking facts and ignoring hard irrefutable evidence against does not make it true.
