Drywall question. Some screws won't deep enough.?

My house is just over a 100 years old. We did some remodeling and I took down some plaster walls and replaced them with drywall. The wood making up the houses frame is very hard. I have been unable to get some of the screws to go deep enough into the drywall. Should I just get shorter screws.
