Is stability control needed for less powerful cars?

I have been considering a new 4-cyl. Nissan Altima for purchase. The manufacturer only offers this valuable safety feature on the 6-cyl. models. A salesman tried to tell me the 4-cyl model with it's continuously variable transmission doesn't need VSC and doesn't have enough power to need it. I think he's B.S. ing me. Or is he?
