Why is airfare so expensive?

I was looking for flights from Los Angeles to London, in sept of next year, and noticed that the airfare is throw the roof? I understand that during the summer time prices tend to go up, but it doesn't make sense that tickets are 1,300 round-trip around Sept. Don't understand what's going on, help?
