Painting Over A Deep Red Wall?

I have just bought a house wih a deep red, burgandy accent wall. I want to re-paint the wall a light tan color (the same as the other walls in the room). If I use primer, will the tan on the accent wall match the other walls or will it come through darker? How many coats of primer will I need to cover it?
